Cargill and Local Communities Planted 5,000 Trees to Preserve Water Sources on Mount Arjuna, Pasuruan, East Java

More than 80 volunteers consisting of forest farmers and employees of PT Sorini Agro Asia Corporindo, a subsidiary of Cargill, planted 5,000 tree seedlings in an area of ​​8 hectares in the Tangkil spring (Tangkil Bulk Block) located in Dayurejo Village, Mount Arjuna, Pasuruan, East Java on Wednesday, December 13 2023. This tree planting activity was organized by Cargill in collaboration with the Cempaka and Bumi Baik Foundations, and supported by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, the Pasuruan Regency Environmental Service, the Loka Jaya Binangun Village Forest Management Institute, the Service Branch Lumajang Forestry-East Java Provincial Forest Service, Pasuruan Regency Forestry Forest Management Unit, and Dayurejo Village Government.

Fanny Hosea, Director of PT Sorini Agro Asia Corporindo, stated “Wherever we are, Cargill is always committed to the communities where we live and works to encourage positive change, including ensuring the preservation of ecosystems and important natural resources. Mount Arjuna has an important function as a regional The main water catchment in Pasuruan and its surroundings for more than 40,000 local communities. Together with the local community, we have been planting trees on Mount Arjuna for more than 9 years. With the additional planting of 5,000 tree seedlings, up to now we have planted 71,500 trees on Mount Arjuna with a total land area of 201 hectares.”

To ensure optimal vegetation function as a water absorption medium, tree species are selected based on their ability to maintain water ecosystems and store groundwater. Apart from that, forest products can also be further used as additional income for local communities to increase their economic resilience. The types of trees included in the 5,000 tree seeds planted include Bamboo, Sintok, Banyan, Gamal, Avocado, Arabica Coffee, Cinnamon, Jackfruit and Java Plum.
